Total knee surgery

The increase in life’s expectancy during the last decades has gone hand-in-hand with a rise in the prevalence of ostheoarthritis.
Once the anatomopathologic events cascade that causes ostheoarthritis is triggered, the cartilage destruction process is irreversible.
When the medical (NSAIDs, chondroprotectors, hyaluronic acid) and physical therapies are considered failed, the only effective alternative is joint replacement surgery.
Total knee arthroplasty, the same as total hip arthroplasty, is regarded by the experts as one of the most effective procedures in modern orthopaedic surgery. Due to the immediate pain relief and the recovery of function only few weeks after surgery, it has become one of the surgical procedures with the most spectacular outcome, especially for the patients.
Obviously prosthetic joints are not natural joints and will never work exactly the same way. Patients should be informed of this in order to avoid dissatisfaction and false expectations on their side.
Knee implants consist of four components. Two of them are metal components, one of them replaces the femoral joint surface and the other replaces the tibial joint surface.
